Cassandra gestured languidly at a stool by the couch. Laura felt that she had no choice, although there was no way the tall woman could miss the miniature camera. She walked over to the stool and sat down. It was only then that she realized just how large Cassandra was. Laura, at five eight, had never felt dwarfed by another human being. Cassandra, she guessed, could be up to seven feet tall. It was hard to judge accurately, because most of the womanâs body was draped in rich, brightly-colored layers of what seemed to be silk.
Saris, Laura thought. Layers and layers of saris or stuff very like them.
âYou came to find the truth,â Cassandra said. âBut you donât need your cameras and microphones for that. Let me help you.â
The big woman held out a large, white hand, and smiled broadly. Laura felt another wave of benevolence wash over her, an all-embracing contentment that recalled all the good, comforting things of childhood. She reached out and put her hand in Cassandraâs.
At the moment of contact, Lauraâs sense of well-being multiplied. She closed her eyes, enjoying utter happiness. All ambition, all doubt, all anxiety was submerged in a warm ocean of joy. But even as the wonderful feeling made her entire body tingle with pleasure, she felt something dark and strange in her mind.
No. This is all a trick.
Laura opened her eyes, pulled her hand away. The glow of contentment faded, and she felt her personality start to assert itself. Cassandra was no longer smiling.
âYou have a strong will,â the big woman said. âSome do have the capacity to resist me, for a while. But it does help if you join us willingly. It makes the process painless, even pleasant.â
Laura stood up, backed away. As she did so, Cassandraâs body heaved, and the woman emitted a slight groan. There was an unpleasant, squelching noise from beneath the rich draperies. A patch of wetness appeared, darkening the red and gold patterned material.
âOh God,â Laura exclaimed.
âThe young ones must find their place in this world,â Cassandra said, her voice no longer warm. âSome humans are needed to make this possible. You are useful. That is all.â
Laura turned to run. The two other robed individuals who had been ushered to the stage were still standing just inside the curtain. They reached up and lowered their hoods simultaneously. Laura gasped as she recognized the taller of the two.
âKat! Youâre here?â
The other person was a child, a frail-looking boy who looked about eight or nine.
âIs this Tommy? Your brother?â
The youngsters did not reply. Instead, they both crouched, arms swinging low, as if playing some childish game. But their faces were deadly serious. Laura backed away, circling Cassandraâs couch, as the two small figures advanced. As they circled around to the left and right, Laura noticed something else, something that seemed impossible.
Their faces, she thought in horror. How can their faces be changing?
Katâs features were blurring, seeming to melt, then reforming into a nightmarish visage. It was that of a huge rat.
